Two home visits on the 1 st and 3 rd days postpartum, for both mother and baby, as well as a 6 week postpartum visit for mother. The newborn metabolic screening is obtained on the day 3 visit. Ongoing support of breastfeeding as well as evaluation and management of breastfeeding concerns, including treatment of breast infections that may occur with breastfeeding.
For hospital births, the same postpartum care is provided before discharge by the midwife, with the newborn cared for by the pediatric care provider. Once discharged, which can be facilitated by the midwife to hours following the birth as is done at free standing birth centers, the same follow up care for mother and newborn as with home birth is provided on days 1 and 3 postpartum.
